Recent rumors have emerged that Arsenal head coach Arsene Wenger is only going to sign a "superstar" striker if he has to spend this summer and two of his current targets are said to be Bayern Munich's Robert Lewandowski and Atletico Madrid's Antoine Griezmann.

The Sun confirmed the speculations, saying that the 66-year-old French manager "wants to bring in a superstar striker before the end of the transfer window" and that Lewandowski and Griezmann are his "top targets".

The report also mentioned that Wenger would be willing to spend more than £60 million for either one of the aforementioned premier goalscorers.

Lewandowski, who will turn 28 later this month, led the Bundesliga in scoring last term with an amazing 30 goals in 32 appearances in the German top flight. Meanwhile, Griezmann is only sixth in La Liga with an equally impressive 22 goals in 38 games as the Spanish top flight is composed of arguably the world's best goalscorers, such as Luis Suárez (40), Cristiano Ronaldo (35), Lionel Messi (26), Neymar (24), and Karim Benzema (24).

Of the two, Wenger's top priority is said to be Lewandowski, who had reportedly delayed his contract extension negotiations with the Bavarians as he is asking a wage increase from the Bundesliga champions.

While Wenger had been a long admirer of the Polish forward, it remains to be seen if the Gunners are willing to pay Lewandowski's wage demand should they be successful in bringing him to the Emirates Stadium this upcoming season.

If the Frenchman fails to snag Lewandowski, then the Gunners will reach out to Atleti for Wenger's compatriot, the 25-year-old Griezmann.

Griezmann just signed a five-year contract extension with Los Colchoneros, but the inclusion of an £85.5 million release clause means that it is not impossible to buy from his current club.

A source from inside the club said that the French boss is "willing to spend on a striker this summer, but only for the right man" and that "he has his targets and players he thinks will improve the squad, but this could go down to the wire", as per Caught Offside.

The reports went out after Lyon rejected Arsenal's £29 million offer for Alexandre Lacazette as the Ligue 1 side is demanding a £40 million transfer fee from the English Premier League giants.
