"World of Warcraft: Legion," the sixth expansion in the "WoW" game series, will be released by Blizzard Entertainment by the end of this month. Gamers are, no doubt, excited, but there's news that artifact weapons might not be carried over to future expansions.
In a recent interview, "World of Warcraft" lead designer David Kosak said that artifact weapons are going to be the "cool new thing" in "Legion," but another cool thing might be introduced in future installments.
"It was garrisons in Warlords of Draenor, and that was pretty cool. We take some of those elements forward, but otherwise that was a Draenor-specific thing," he told Polygon. "Now you have an artifact weapon, and it's going to be very Legion-specific. Down the line, I imagine we'll have something else really cool."
Kosak explained that if they keep on adding new features in every expansion, the game would be "unwieldy." "World of Warcraft" is now 11 years old and they have to consider keeping it at a manageable level.
In explaining why Blizzard came up with the artifact system for the sixth expansion, Kosak said that they had been looking into doing more class-specific content. With the custom artifact weapons, they gained the opportunity to do that, and they will then be able to do more class-centered stories since different classes undergo different experiences.
According to Blizzard's Battlenet website, only the most seasoned veterans of Azeroth have the spirit to wield these artifact weapons, which grows in power as the gamer also gains more power. Its abilities as well as the way it looks and feels will be influenced by the choices the gamer makes.
There are unique weapons for Death Knights, Druids, Mages, Rogues, and other classes, with previews available on the artifacts page on Battlenet, and these can be obtained by completing quests.
"World of Warcraft: Legion" will be made available starting Aug. 30.
