'Tunnel' topped last week's Korean box-office, surpassing 'The Last Princess'

"Tunnel" has taken the top position in the last week’s box-office. Over five days since its premiere on Wednesday, Aug. 10, the film has made $19 million and toppled “Operation Chromite” and “The Last Princess."

According to Variety, “Tunnel” has attracted 2.58 million admissions since its opening day. Which accounted for 40 percent of the total weekend box office revenue.

“The Last Princess” and “Operation Chromite” trailed in second and third place. “The Last Princess” gained $7.33 million last weekend and totaled $25.7 million in two weeks, while “Operation Chromite” added $3.51 million to its total earning of $44.1 million in three weeks.

Another blockbuster “Train to Busan” closed the weekend by earning $2.64 million, accumulating $78.7 million after four weeks.

Actor Ha Jung Woo’s impressive performance, as reported by Yoonhap News Agency, in collaboration with with the director-screenwriter Kim Seong-hun, brings the tunnel collapse disaster thrillingly and hauntingly to life. Actor Oh Dal Su and actress Bae Doo Na also played in the movie.

The story revolves around car salesman Lee Jung-su (Ha), who was on his way back home bringing a birthday cake to his daugther but was trapped inside a newly built tunnel, which suddenly collapsed. Rescue team leader Kim Dae Gyeong (Oh) guided him to wait for the rescue team to get him out of the collapsed tunnel.

While waiting for the rescue team to get to him, Jung Su stayed alive and hydrated with two bottles of water and his daughter’s birthday cake. The movie depicted a lonely struggle of a man trapped in his car surrounding by debris of collapsed tunnel. However, the performance of Oh as rescue team leader brings freshness and humor aspect in the movie.

In an interview with Screen Anarchy, Kim said that he tried to balance the drama and humor in his film.

“And that's also how I think that life works: we have all kind of emotions in our life, you can differentiate them but they all mix together, “ he said.

As the movie has earned box-office in Korean market, it is expected to be ready for international release soon.
