The 2006 crime drama movie "The Departed," which starred Matt Damon and Leonardo DiCaprio, will be remade for television courtesy of Amazon.

The hour-long drama series, according to The Hollywood Reporter, will be a joint project of Amazon Studios, Plan B Entertainment, Initial Entertainment Group, Vertigo Entertainment along with Warner Bros. TV.

Like the movie, which was adapted from the 2002 Hong Kong film "Infernal Affairs," the TV adaptation will also center on a young police officer who is tasked to go undercover in order to infiltrate a gang believed to be involved in organized crime. Meanwhile, a mobster assigns one of their own to infiltrate the police unit that focuses on organized crime.

The THR report says the small-screen adaptation of "The Departed" is set in modern-day Chicago, where the events are shifting for the opposing drug gangs. Amidst the danger, the two infiltrators work to fulfill their respective missions while trying not to get killed.

In the film, the young police officer, Bill Costigan, was portrayed by DiCaprio and the mob's mole, Colin Sullivan, was portrayed by Damon. It also starred Jack Nicholson as the mobster Frank Costello, Mark Wahlberg as Staff Sgt. Sean Dignam, Martin Sheen as Capt. Oliver Charles Queenan, and Alec Baldwin as Capt. George Ellerby.

The movie, directed by Martin Scorsee, gained positive reviews and also raked in almost $290 million in the worldwide box office against a $90 million budget, according to Box Office Mojo.

It won Best Director at the Golden Globe Awards plus five nominations, namely Best Picture, Best Actor for DiCaprio, Best Supporting Actor for Nicholson and Wahlberg, and Best Screenplay. It also won four awards at the Oscars, namely Best Picture, Best Director, Best Film Editing, and Best Screenplay. Wahlberg was likewise nominated for Best Supporting Actor.

With this, viewers will be expecting a lot from the TV adaptation, to be written by Jason Richman. The cast as well as the schedule for release has yet to be announced.
