"Duke Nukem 3D" has been the godfather of first-person shooter games for the past 20 years, with numerous attempts to revamping and re-releasing it. As a result Gearbox Software publishing producer Scott Warr has assembled a team - mostly consisting the original development team members - to work on the "Duke Nukem 3D: 20th Anniversary Edition World Tour."

Polygon reported that the retro remastered game contains a new visual update and eight new singleplayer levels. The game will also include an eight-player multiplayer, co-op, and bot battle experiences. The levels have been designed by Allen Blum III and Richard "Levelord" Gray, while an all-new music score will be composed by Lee Jackson. Voice actor Jon St. John has even returned to reprise the role of Duke himself.

Although the game may be remastered, Scott Warr has stayed adamant to keep the visuals as "retro" as they can even for the new levels, according to an interview by Gamespot. There would be some visual updates like better framerate and lighting to name a few, but graphics will not be changed drastically. Players can even have the option to switch "between the new renderer and old renderer."

The developers also made use of the original tools and materials from the original 1996 game and used them to construct the new levels. The current technology today (especially with Gearbox's "True3D Rendering" mode) helps in adding new tricks and tweaks to the original gameplay.

New content in-game will also include a new weapon called the Incinerator, which was originally hidden in the game codes since there was no place for it in the final 1996 release. Aside from the new weapon, players will encounter new enemies including the Firefly, which looks deceptively tiny but enlarges into something huge and fire-breathing, and a new boss monster at the end.

"Duke Nukem 3D: 20th Anniversary World Tour" will be released for the PlayStation 4, Xbox One and Microsoft Windows via Steam on Oct. 11 for a price of $19.99.
