NBC confirms to cancel "Grimm" Season 6 because of low ratings on Monday. This is quite surprising as people think the series will last longer.

"Grimm" has been a long running Friday night drama series in NBC since 2011. The network has made an official announcement Monday to cancel the supernatural drama after Season 6 due to its low ratings.

Its final season will only have 13 episodes, less than usual 22 episodes for each previous five seasons. "Grimm" Season 6 will premiere on Jan. 6.

According to Deadline, the series last season scored a low audience ratings. It only averaged a 1.6 most current adults 18-49 rating and 6 million viewers. However "Grimm" still held the top position as one of the Friday highest-rated scripted series.

"Grimm" is the supernatural fantasy drama created by trio Stephen Carpenter, David Greenwalt and Jim Kouf. They created the story based on the German mythology of Wessen, or creature in German. Grimm is a Universal Television and Hazy Mills production with its main characters are played by David Giuntoli, Russell Hornsby, Silas Weir Mitchell and Sasha Roiz.

The story took place in Portland, where homicide detective Nick Burkhardt (Giuntoli) and his partner Hank Griffin (Hornsby) work. Nick found out that he is a descendant of Grimm, the hunter who possess the capabilities to fight supernatural forces. As a Grimm, he is in charge to maintain balance between the world of human being and the world of Wessen, mythological creatures.

Other than his partner Hank, Nick also receives help from a Wesen, Monroe (Mitchell), a wolf-like creature whom he becomes friend with. Monroe is Nick's main source of information to the supernatural community. While his superior, Captain Sean Renard (Roiz) is a half-Wessen, descendant of a magical creature called Zauberbiest, a warlock.

The season finale will include the battle that audience have been waiting for, between Nick Burkhardt against Captain Renard, Variety reported. The "Grimm" Season 6 will premiere on NBC on Jan. 6.
