"The Pink Panther 2" actress Emily Mortimer joins "The Huntsman: Winter's War" star Emily Blunt and "The Odd Life of Timothy Green" actor Lin-Manuel Miranda in Disney's upcoming sequel "Mary Poppins Returns." She is officially a member of the Banks family.
According to Variety, Mortimer will play the role of Jane Banks in "Mary Poppins Returns." She has a brother named Michael Banks ("Skyfall" actor Ben Whishaw). Blunt will play the titular character as the magical nanny Mary Poppins while Miranda will play as the street lamplighter named Jack.
"Mary Poppins Returns" is set 25 years in Depression-era London after the original 1964 film. Jane was once one of the children being looked after by Poppins. She and Michael are the now grown-up siblings and are visited once again by their nanny following a personal loss.
"Mary Poppins Returns" will be directed by "Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides" director Rob Marshall. It will feature a screenplay by Oscar nominee David Magee and will be produced by Marshall, "Into the Woods" producer John DeLuca, and "Bridge of Spies" producer Marc Platt. Its all-new original songs are written by American lyricists Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, Entertainment Weekly reported.
"Mary Poppins Returns" is based on "The Mary Poppins Stories" by novelist Pamela Lyndon Travers. It also stars "The Giver" actress Meryl Streep as the cousin Topsy of Poppins.
Mortimer has starred in the political drama series "The Newsroom" as MacKenzie McHale and television comedy "Doll & Em" as Emily. She can be seen next in the CBS Films movie "The Sense of an Ending" and Legendary's "Spectral." She is repped by WME and Lighthouse Management and Media.
"Mary Poppins Returns" is expected to arrive in theaters on Dec. 25, 2018.
