"Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2" actress Glenn Close, "Game of Thrones" actor Jonathan Pryce, and "Mr. Robot" actor Christian Slater are set as the stars of Meg Wolitzer's novel adaptation "The Wife." Close is finally preparing to become The Wife.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Close plays the title role as Joan Castleman in "The Wife." Pryce plays as her husband Joe Castleman while Slater in an undisclosed role. Other cast members include "Terminal" alum Max Irons, "Downtown Abbey" star Elizabeth McGovern, "Anthropoid" actor Harry Lloyd, and "Bastards" actress Annie Starke as young Joan.
"The Wife" has been in the works for over a decade and was initially set up at Fine Line Features. "Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters" star Logan Lerman, "The OA" actress Brit Marling, and "Hail, Caesar!" actress Frances McDormand had been originally attached to it.
"The Wife" is a story built around a moment of revelation for Joan. Joan is married to one of those men who own the world and has no idea how to take care of himself or anyone else, Variety reported. Joe is also one of America's pre-eminent novelists and is about to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature.
In the plot of "The Wife," the flawlessly gracious Joan has spent 40 years ignoring her own literary talents to support her husband's career. She suddenly decided to finally stop, making the story interesting and the characters fascinating.
"Daybreak" Swedish filmmaker Björn Runge is in the director's chair from the 2003 adapted screenplay written by "Olive Kitteridge" screenwriter Jane Anderson for "The Wife." Rosalie Swedlin for Anonymous Content, Meta Louise Foldager for Meta Film, Piers Tempest for Tempo Productions, Piodor Gustafsson for Spark Film and Television, and Claudia Bluemhuber are the producers.
Embankment is selling international rights for "The Wife," with CAA / WME co-representing the U.S. London-based Embankment Films has secured multiple presales throughout international territories and brokered the financing, provided by Silver Reel, Creative Scotland, Film Väst, Chimney, the Swedish Film Institute, and SF Studios.
"The Wife" is currently shooting and expected to be released in theaters in the first quarter of 2017.
