"Death Note" director Adam Wingard said that the live-action film of the popular manga series will have an adult tone and a ton of violence.
In an interview, Wingard likened the tone of the series to "The Guest," an action-thriller film that he also directed. He went to say that he had always wanted to create a live-action anime film with adult themes, Collider reported.
"I remember going to Suncoast growing up and you see Akira there with the little 'Not for Kids' sticker on it. That always made an impact on me. So, doing my first live-action anime thing, to me it was important that you have those adult themes. So, it's got nudity, it's got swearing, it's got a ton of violence," he said.
The film already started filing in June. The movie stars Nat Wolf ("The Fault in Our Stars") who will play the titular role of Light, Willem Dafoe ("Finding Mr. Fox") as Ryuk the Shinigami and Keith Stanfield (Straight Outta Compton") as L. The movie was supposed to be under Warner Bros. until it finally landed on streaming giant Netflix, Screen Rant reported.
The "Death Note" live-action movie is based on a Japanese manga by Tsugumi Ohba with the same title. The series follows the story of a high school student who discovers a supernatural notebook from a Shinigami (means god of death in English) that grants its user the ability to kill anyone whose name and face he knows.
"Death Note" is slated to arrive on Netflix in 2017.
