New York Knicks president Phil Jackson is reportedly "unhappy" about the team's usage rate of the triangle offense, the system that the former 11-time NBA champion coach has used for his squads during his time.
Jackson, who retired from coaching after the 2010-2011 season to become an NBA executive, is said to be "upset" about Knicks head coach Jeff Hornacek's utilization of the triangle offense, saying that they are "not utilizing the triangle as much as they should", as per CBS Sports.
The Zen Master reportedly is "disappointed" because the Knicks have started the season with a 2-4 record despite making many developments in the offseason, including a coaching change with Hornacek and the acquisition of Derrick Rose, Joakim Noah, and Courtney Lee via trade and free-agency.
The report said that Jackson has been frustrated with how things are going for the Knicks since he arrived in 2014 and its root cause could be his expectations on the coaches he hires to lead the team. He is said to be expecting them to share the same passion to the triangle offense that he had during his coaching career, but unfortunately, it seemed like it could not be duplicated.
Jackson and Hornacek have agreed in the offseason that the latter will not fully use the triangle offense this season but will only apply "some aspects of it" when needed.
This has compounded Jackson's unhappiness as he could see that it is not working with the kind of personnel the team has at the moment.
Fansided reported that the Knicks are scoring 104.0 points per 100 possessions, which ranks 13th in the NBA, a "full 13 spots better than the Knicks' rank of No. 26 in offensive efficiency in 2015-16".
Meanwhile, Rose is said to be agreeing with Jackson when it comes to the state of the team's offense, also saying that it "doesn't suit their personnel" and the pick-and-roll play should be maximized.
However, some NBA analysts believe that the Knicks' offense is not their main problem right now, but their defense.
While the Knicks does not have one of the best offenses in the league, they are clearly not falling behind in that department. The team is dead last in the league when it comes to points allowed to opponents with a deplorable 110.9 points per 100 possessions.
