"Marvel vs. Capcom 4" is already been reportedly in development and planned to be released next year, rumors say.

According to rumors from Polygon, the latest cross-over entry in the "Marvel vs. Capcom" franchise is said to release sometime next year after being possibly announced at the PlayStation Experience 2016 (PSX 2016).

The reports say that the Marvel's side of character rosters will be based heavily on the Marvel Cinematic Universe versions, possibly replacing the usual candidates of the series like Wolverine and Magneto. Instead, we might be seeing unconventional characters in "Marvel vs. Capcom 4" like Rocket Raccoon and Ant-Man based on Marvel's film output.

Of course, that's not to say that the X-Men won't be showing up in the possible latest title in the franchise, since it started out as "X-Men Vs. Street Fighter" in the beginning. However, when reached for comment from IGN, a representative of Capcom just merely said, "Capcom does not comment on rumors or speculation."

Previously, "Marvel Vs. Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds" first released in 2011, with a following sequel called "Ultimate Marvel Vs. Capcom 3", which featured X-Men mainstays Wolverine, Magneto, Phoenix, Storm, X-23 and Sentinel as playable characters, that was released shortly after that year. It was actually more than a decade since "Marvel vs. Capcom 2" was released. There was a compilation title to be released entitled "Marvel Vs. Capcom: Origins" was released for the PS3 and Xbox 360 back in 2012, but was pulled from digital stores due to expiring licenses.

Marvel characters in the earlier games were usually based on their appearances in their animated series from the 90s, especially the X-Men, with the TV series' voice actors characterizing their video game counterparts. The same was done for "Marvel Vs. Capcom 3," where got voice actors who did the voices of the late 2000s series, such as "Wolverine and the X-Men," "The Spectacular Spider-Man," and "The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes."
