A new "X-Men" film will come sooner than expected as "New Mutants" director Josh Boone confirms that the film the underway. Boone announced the news on Twitter.
In his post, Boone confirmed that the film will start shooting on May next year. He also referenced the 'mystery "X-Men" movie' whose set is currently under construction in Montreal, Canada.
Earlier, a Canadian news outlet reported that an "X-Men" film set construction will be kicking off next month at MELS Studios complex, Den of Geek reported. MELS' boss confirmed that indeed, the studio struck a deal with 20th Century Fox but did not reveal the film to which the set will be intended for.
His announcement presumably confirms that instead of having a follow-up to "Apocalypse," Fox has decided to take on a new route. If this is the case, the "X-Men" franchise will be looking at a new set of mutants that do not include Hugh Jackman's Wolverine or any of the previously featured mutants in the 90s films such as Storm, Jean Grey or even Mystique.
Ofcourse, it is still entirely possible that the studio may give a go signal to make both films. If that is the case, then Fox will have a lot on its plate.
After the underwhelming performance of "Apocalypse," Fox is reportedly planning to reboot the main "X-Men" line of films. It had already been confirmed that Bryan Singer will not be back. This is in contrast with the reports that Fox wants to keep the trio of Jennifer Lawrence, James McAvoy and Michael Fassbender within the "X-Men" universe, Collider reported.
Fox's hands will be full with the upcoming release of "Logan" and in preparation for "Deadpool 2." "New Mutants" on the other hand is set to release sometime in 2018.
