Monday's episode of the "Shadowhunters" Season 2 gave viewers a surprising twist with Jocelyn's death. Slavkin acknowledged that the story went off the books--with author Cassandra Clare's approval--to mark the beginning of Clary's journey into being a hero.
Slavkin explained that in order for Clary (Katherine McNamara) to fully own up to her responsibility, she needs to face difficulty. The showrunner decided that the death of a loved one is the strongest hardship that could transform a person. It is the biggest adversary that could lead to a person's evolution.
"In order for someone to become a hero, they need to go through adversity, and the death of parents is part of becoming a true adult - a true soul unto yourself, and we felt like that was something that was a really powerful thing that could push her character through 2A in a really compelling manner," Slavkin told TV Line.
Meanwhile, McNamara agreed with Slavkin about the purpose of Jocelyn's death in the "Shadowhunters" Season 2. She told TV Guide that her death was a needed step in Clary's evolution as a Shadowhunter. Likewise, Jocelyn's death also opened the way for a more exciting show. By going off the book canon, fans will be prompted to guess what the show has in store next.
