"Greenleaf" actor Keith David has signed to voice Gorilla superhero Solovar in a two-part episode of "The Flash" Season 3. The Flash is heading back to Gorilla City.
According to Deadline, David's character Solovar will make his DC Television debut in episodes 13 and 14 of "The Flash" Season 3. He is a longstanding ally of the Central City Speedster in DC Comics. He is the leader of Gorilla City, which is a technological utopia populated by super-intelligent gorillas hidden in the African jungle.
The Solovar character is one of the oldest "The Flash" supporting characters, having debuted in 1959 in "The Flash #106." He is reknowned for his wisdom and super psychic powers but is opposed by the evil Grodd, who wants to overthrow him and rule Gorilla City himself and was voiced on The CW series by David Sobolov. Writer John Broome and artist Carmine Infantino created him.
Meanwhile, Grodd has been one of the most prolific villains as he has starred in both Seasons 1 and 2 of "The Flash," Comic Book reported. At the end of Season 2, he found himself transported to Earth-2, where he was abandoned outside of Gorilla City. In the comics, he can be seen in that location numerous times and often clashes with Solovar for control over the ape paradise.
David's recent voice work includes Lord Marmoo in Netflix's "Kulipari: An Army of Frogs," Adventure Time's "Flame King," and Cheshire Cat in ABC's "Once Upon a Time in Wonderland." His recent on-camera credits include "Greenleaf," "Person of Interest," "Extant," and "Enlisted."
The two-episode arc will air later this spring after "The Flash" returns from its winter hiatus, which is on Jan. 24, Tuesday, at 8 p.m. ET on The CW. It airs Tuesdays at the same time, followed by DC's "Legends of Tomorrow" at 9 p.m. "Supergirl" also airs Mondays at 8 p.m. ET/PT and "Arrow" on Wednesdays at 8 p.m.
