"Into the Badlands" actor Daniel Wu is set to join the cast of MGM's adventure fantasy film "Tomb Raider" opposite "The Danish Girl" actress Alicia Vikander. "The Wave" director Roar Uthaug is being helmed on it.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Wu will play a ship captain Lu Ren who partners with Lara Croft (Vikander) on a quest to find her father in "Tomb Raider." They will face off against the villain Father Mathias Vogel ("The Hateful Eight" actor Walton Goggins).
"Sherlock Holmes 3" writer Geneva Robertson-Dworet will be penning the script of "Tomb Raider." GK's Graham King is serving as producer with MGM and Warner Bros. on board to co-produce. MGM and Warner Bros. acquired the rights of the hit video game franchise from GK Films.
The original "Tomb Raider" video game was released in 1996 by London-based Eidos Interactive, which is now part of Square Enix. Square Enix released a reboot in 2013 with a younger and 21-year-old Croft being sent off on her first big adventure amid amped-up action and set pieces, Variety reported.
GK Films purchased the film rights of "Tomb Raider" in 2011 from Square Enix Limited. MGM, on the other hand, has acquired the rights of the video game in 2013.
Wu is best known as William Xu in Sebastian Cordero's sci-fi drama "Europa Report" opposite "Maleficent" actor Sharlto Copley. He also starred opposite "American Odyssey" actress Orla Brady in the martial arts series "Into the Badlands," which returns to AMC for its Season 2 this spring. He is also expected to star in the Chinese fantasy comedy "Wished" opposite "My New Sassy Girl" actress Victoria Song.
The production of "Tomb Raider" is currently underway and will be released on March 16, 2018. "The Vow" producer Cassidy Lange is overseeing production for MGM, and "Napoleon" producer Niija Kuykendall is handling production for Warner Bros.
