As the gang is set to air their season finale this week, "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" has once again pushed the envelope on how they could tell the story of an awful group of person in a really funny way. But as the group behind the popular television series is already on its 12th season, one character may have actually been totally different.
Kristen Wiig as Dee Reynolds
Dee "Sweet Dee" Reynolds is played by Kaitlin Olson - a raunchy female character that can meet the gang's plan (that often fail miserably) head on. But according to Uproxx, Olson was "neck-and-neck" with another popular comedian Kristen Wiig. During that time, Wiig wasn't as popular as she is today and Olson eventually got the part although Wiig went on to become part of "Saturday Night Live."
Of course, Olson's part in "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia" became more than just a bit player in the comedy series. She also married her co-star and series creator Rob McElhenney and her pregnancy was even played for jokes in some episodes in season six. In the series, Dee actually became a surrogate for Carmen (played by Britanny Daniel) a trans-gender woman who used to date Mac.
Dee Reynolds as a Straight Character
Another big revelation about the Dee's character in the series was the fact that she is originally written as the straight character who would play along with other cast members. According to Screen Rant, Olson was surprised that she is written as a straight character in a comedy series and McElhenney reasoned that he doesn't know how to write for female characters. Oslon recommended that he wrote her part just like the rest of the gang.
Because of the writing changes, Dee became one of the funniest character in a pool of vast comedy series. Fortunately, the gang will continue with their ways next year as the series is renewed until the 14th season.
