"Empire" has snagged Mariah Carey to guest star in Season 3. The casting was announced Monday at the Television Critics Association (TCA) press tour on Monday.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, the Grammy-award winner will play the role of Kitty, a superstar who will team up with Jamal to produce a new hit music. In the episode airing on Oct. 5, Kitty will help Jamal dig deep to overcome personal difficulties and eventually reach a musical breakthrough. It is unclear if Carey will be seen doing a musical performance on the said episode.
The casting of Carey on "Empire" Season 3 has been planned out for months. Showrunner Lee Daniels first announced in 2015 that the songstress would be guest starring on the show; however, their initial plans did not pan out as everyone hoped.
"We've been talking to Mariah about doing the show for a couple of years," Fox Television Group co-chairman and CEO Dana Walden told reporters.
"She always makes a point of coming over and talking about her passion for the show."
Carey joins previously cast "Private Practice" alum Taye Diggs who will recur on Empire Season 3, TV Line reported last month. Diggs has been tapped to play Angelo Dubois, a city councilman who comes from a respected and wealthy family in New York. Other guest stars include Sierra McClain, French Montana and Birdman.
Carey also stars in her new project called "Mariah's World," a docuseries which gives fans an inside look into the singer's luxurious lifestyle as she begins her musical tour in the US, Europe and Africa. The reality TV series will premiere on Dec. 4 at 9PM on E! Online.
"Empire" stars Taraji P. Henson, Terrence Howard, Bryshere Gray and Jussie Smollett. Season 3 kicks off on Wednesday, Sept. 21 at 9PM on FOX.
