"Star Trek" franchise will return on television with a new timeline set a decade before the original series. "Star Trek: Discovery" will be the latest instalment of the sci-fi phenomenon on small screens.
Fans of the franchise went to lengthy discussions about its timeline when it was teased that the ship's registry is "NCC-1031." The number comes well before the "NCC-1701" registry of USS Enterprise commanded by Captain Kirk.
The time period will discuss the first voyage in space of USS Discovery. Showrunner Bryan Fuller confirmed that "Star Trek: Discover" will fill the gap between "Star Trek: Enterprise" and "Star Trek: The Original Series at the Television Critics' Association Summer Press Tour via Comic Book Resources.
He went to say that the storytelling will deviate from the traditional captain oriented format. Fuller hinted that the series will follow the perspective of a lieutenant commander, a role that is currently being cast.
"We've seen six shows from a Captain's point of view - 'Star Trek Discovery' will show the bridge from a different perspective," said Fuller.
There were reports that pointed the possibility of having a female and a non-white captain on the show for diversity. Fuller on the other hand confirmed that the show will feature more aliens on board.
Likewise, he also revealed that USS Discovery will be similar to the original Enterprise ship shown in the classic series and denied that the Romulan-Federation war will be the central conflict on the show. However, he did not deny that there might be a major tie-in to it, Screen Rant reported. It is also worth to note that the Klingon-Federation conflict may also play a major role because said war took place during that era.
"Star Trek: Discover" premieres on CBS on January 2017. The program will be available for streaming exclusively via CBS All Access.
