Niantic's "Pokemon Go" is taking the world's youth by storm, but older people are confused by it. A game developer has decided to make a game out of that premise.
The augmented reality (AR) game has enjoyed a massive success after being released to the public. However, it has also confused elder people who cannot seem to grasp the younger generation's attraction to the mobile game.
This sentiment has actually led to a small sub-niche in the gaming and entertainment industries, Polygon said. One developer, Clayton Chowaniec, made a browser-based game entitled "That Pokeyman Thing" that apparently parodies the elderly generation's difficulty to comprehend the game's popularity.
Polygon revealed that the game is a 2-dimensional, top down role-playing game reminiscent of the classic Pokemon games. The main protagonist is an old man who is about to be sent to a home for misbehaving elderly. The RPG gives players quests that involve capturing creatures that are portrayed as parodies of Nintendo's beloved fictional creatures. All the time, the old man has to find his errant grandchild who spends an unhealthy amount of time playing Pokemon games.
VG247 added that the game's interface features a smartphone as a nod to the now-popular AR mobile game by Niantic. The article also noted the presence of other elderly people who complain about young people who invade their yards with smartphones at hand.
"Pokemon Go" is developed by Niantic under a partnership with Nintendo, who owns the copyright to Pokemon assets. The game utilizes three technologies, namely, Global Positioning Satellite, smartphones and the Internet to bring Pokemon to reality. Using data on their location, players use their phones and Internet connections to find Pokemon located in areas nearby. People have to travel to these locations in order to catch Pokemon, and challenge gyms held by other players or teams.
The game has also been criticized for glitches and lack of certain features that help in locating Pokemon accurately. After pulling down an earlier version of the feature, Niantic released on Aug. 10 an updated tracking feature. iTech Post said that the new tracker shows users which Pokemon have been sighted in an area and which ones are close by.
