Executive producer Julie Plec confirmed the eagerness of Nina Dobrev to return for the "The Vampire Diaries" Season 8 to see her character, Elena Gilbert, off with her last moments.

According to Plec, Dobrev said that she would also like to know what will be the end game for Elena, and is very willing to return in case the producers decided to bring her character back to life to tie loose ends. Ian Somerhalder, who portrays the vampire Damon Salvatore, did not seem too keen with this intention and was too upfront about the matter.

Somerhalder posed a confused question to Plec during the panel at the Comic Con after the producer confirmed Dobrev's compliance to recur for Season 8. Apparently, the two have discussed Dobrev's return and Somerhalder might have come to an understanding that the issue is resolved.

Plec seemed to be steadfast about Dobrev's return since it will be a fitting closure for her character, and fans longed to know what would become of Elena as the series originally revolved around her and her romance with the Salvatore brothers. This claim was also backed up by CW president Mark Pedowitz during the Television Critics Association press tour, wherein he stated that he would love to have Dobrev back for the show but should it not happen, Plec still has the guns to pull off an epic finale for the fans.

Somerhalder's insistence on not allowing Dobrev's return may stem from his current situation with his wife Nikki Reed, and a possible encounter with his ex might escalate the matter for the worse due to the divorce speculations. He might have to live through this since most of the producers are aiming for her return which could be expected in episode 16 of Season 8, Breathecast reported.

Meanwhile, "The Vampire Diaries" Season 8 will adapt the 1987 horror comedy movie "The Lost Boys" of Joel Schumacher, per Deadline. The series will be written by Rob Thomas and each episode will sport a decade-long period, which will make it a total of seven decades that would be covered for this season.

"The Vampire Diaries" Season 8 is set to premiere on Oct. 21 at 8 p.m. on The CW.
