Marvel producer Victoria Alonso said in an interview that the studio will soon announce who will be at the helm of "Captain Marvel."
Marvel recently unveiled that Brie Larson will step in the titular role with Nicole Perlman and Meg LeFauve tapped to write the script. She went to praise Larson as a performer and said that the script is currently on process of getting done, The Mary Sue reported.
"We have an incredible performer in Brie Larson and a devoted woman to hold this banner which is a heavy one, I have to say. We're in early conversations. We have writers and we are trying to get a script done. We don't have a director yet, but it's coming. It's all coming," she said.
In July, Marvel boss Kevin Feige unleased a shortlist of accomplished directors who are being eyed to direct "Captain Marvel." The names in the list include Indie filmmaker Emily Carmichael, Niki Caro ("Whale Rider"), Jennifer Kent ("The Babadook"), and original "Wonder Woman" director Michelle McLaren, Screen Rant reported.
Marvel is reportedly leaning towards a female director for the project but there is also a possibility that they may have a male director at the helm with Destin Daniel Cretton ("Short Term 12") and Lenny Ambramson ("Room") circling the shortlist. There is also the possibility that Joss Whedon and The Russo Brothers could make the cut.
"Captain Marvel" originally appeared in the comic books as a male supporting character. It was not until the 1970s when the title was given to a female character, Carol Danvers who also had a stint as a non-powered human ally of the "X-Men."
"Captain Marvel" is slated for release on July 12, 2019.
