NBA News: Spurs to retire Tim Duncan's No. 21 jersey

San Antonio Spurs planned to retire Tim Duncan’s No. 21 jersey in a special ceremony next month. Duncan is considered as the greatest power forward in the basketball history and his accomplishment is enormous.

The special post-game ceremony to retire Duncan’s jersey is scheduled on Dec. 18 as reported by CBS Sports. His number 21 will be the eight numbers to be raised in the rafter at AT&T Center, San Antonio after David Robinson (50), George Gervin (44), James Silas (13), Johnny Moore (00), Sean Elliott (32), Avery Johnson (6) and Bruce Bowen (12).

San Antonio Spurs announced their decision to retire his number on Wednesday, Nov. 16 as reported by USA Today. The special ceremony will be held after the game against New Orleans Pelicans.

Duncan was drafter by San Antonio Spurs as first pick in the 1997, exactly ten years after the Spurs selected David Robinson as their first pick. Together, Duncan and Robinson created a twin tower in the Spurs front court. They also brought two NBA championship titles to San Antonio in 1999 and 2003.

Following Robinson’s retirement in 2003. Duncan became the leader for the Spurs. He then evolved to become one of the most elite power forward. He led the Spurs to win three more NBA championship titles in 2005, 2007 and 2014

Duncan is considered is as the greatest power forward in the history of basketball. He is known as a very effective scorer and one of the best interior defenders in the NBA. He has an excellent and unrivaled fundamental skills which earned him nickname ”The Big Fundamental” in his career.

Throughout his 19 years career with the Spurs, Duncan usually made double-double in point and rebounds. In his entire career, he averaged 19.8 points and 11.1 rebounds per game.
