Indiana Pacers’ Glenn Robinson III won the 2017 Slam Dunk Contest by flying over three people and dunk. The son of 1990’s NBA player Glen Robinson has made his mark in the NBA landscape.
Robinson brought back the excitement in the NBA Slam Dunk Contest with his flexibility and high vertical leap. The shortest of the contestants, with only 6’6” heights, but his high flying ability has awarded him two times perfect score from the jury as reported by Bleacher Report.
He started the first dunk by flying over two men and brought the quiet audience in Smoothie King Center to cheer him. With his very high vertical leap, his head was able to reach the rim.
His second attempt earned him 41 points with windmill dunk ended with a dub. His dunk is a homage to Dee Brown who won the 1991 NBA Slam Dunk Contest with the signature dab dunk. With total of 91 points, he challenged Phoenix Suns Derrick Jones Jr. in the final. He scored a 94 points in the final with a dunk over the Pelicans mascot, his team mate Paul George and a cheerleader.
Robinson was ecstatic to win the dunk contest. He shook the jury’s hand and as reported by New York Times he said, “This is just the beginning for me.”
Since Vince Carter pushed the boundary of slam dunk in 2000, the NBA Slam Dunk Contest has lost its excitement. It is because contestants mostly repeated dunks from the previous winners. The contestant dunk repetition from the previous years dunk with a small polishing.
Two finalists in the 2017 NBA Slam Dunk Contest attempted similar dunk. Jones jumped over Phoenis Suns mascots, one man and the Phoenix Suns dancer but failed.
Later, Robinson tried similar dunk. He had a very high vertical leap and successfully dunk over three people. For that reason, the jury awarded him the winner of the NBA Slam Dunk Contest.
